This isn’t so much a how-to, as it is a tip for anyone running a website.  One of the great things about open-source software such as Wordpress or Joomla, is that you can often find free plugins or themes for them. The danger here lies in hidden spam links (so-called “SEO” plugins are notorious for this) that are deep in the code – and unless you know where to look, you’re out of luck.

I recently discovered a cool little utility called Rank Checker, created by the guys over at SEOBook. This useful utility quickly tells you your search engine ranking (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) for any keyword and website!  This is a real time saver, and can be handy if you’re trying to optimize your site. Unfortunately, SEOBook does force a compulsory registration on you to get the tool, but never fear – you can always use a throw-away mail account to ensure you don’t get spammed.

The best way to get Google to crawl your site and index your pages is to have a sitemap. Even better is a dynamically updated xml sitemap, but how do you create one?  The easiest way is to use a sitemap generator.  Input your site’s URL, and let this application do all the work – in just a few minutes (depending on the size of your site), you’ll have an XML sitemap ready to download.  So now what do you do with it?
