This isn’t so much a how-to, as it is a tip for anyone running a website.  One of the great things about open-source software such as Wordpress or Joomla, is that you can often find free plugins or themes for them. The danger here lies in hidden spam links (so-called “SEO” plugins are notorious for this) that are deep in the code – and unless you know where to look, you’re out of luck.

This is too good not to post – a while back, SEOMoz put together a pretty awesome SEO Cheat Sheet for web developers. It’s informative, compact, and good practice for anyone who wants to give their site a leg up in the search engine rankings. While it’s not a crash course in SEO, it will definitely get you started on the right foot.  All content in the attached PDF is the property of its original authors.

Holy cow, Batman! I’m so grateful I’m using WP Hashcash – I can’t imagine having to manually delete all the crap that comes through this blog.  In the 2 months I’ve had this blog running, I’ve received over 100 attempted spam comments. Luckily, WP Hashcash is able to catch them and prevent them from getting approved, without interfering with real commenters :)   I suppose spam is inevitable in this day and age, but even I was surprised at the speed in which those bots found my little site. :)

This has been a long-time issue, and someone from Reddit recently brought it up and it’s good enough to share here. Have you ever tried to cancel a print job in Windows, just to have it sit there forever and partially print anyway? What a pain! The best way to immediately cancel a print job without waiting is to stop/restart the spooler service. You can do this several ways:

I recently discovered a cool little utility called Rank Checker, created by the guys over at SEOBook. This useful utility quickly tells you your search engine ranking (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) for any keyword and website!  This is a real time saver, and can be handy if you’re trying to optimize your site. Unfortunately, SEOBook does force a compulsory registration on you to get the tool, but never fear – you can always use a throw-away mail account to ensure you don’t get spammed.

A lot of people only want to follow the tweets of people who are also following them back, for one reason or another. Twitter doesn’t really provide a fast and easy way to see a list of people that aren’t reciprocating – so how can you tell?

Tired of the big block of ads at the top of Google’s search results? How about the annoying ones on the side? If you want to view just the organic results, and bypass all the paid search, it’s very easy to do in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Don’t you love when a website forces you to sign up for an account, in order to post a comment or place an order?  It sucks, because you know you’ll start receiving spam email in no time.  What if you want to download a trial copy of some software, but they’ll only send the download link to your email address?  Forced account registrations are a whole other issue, but for now we’ll just tackle the email spam.

We’ve all been there, right?  We delete a file, empty the recycle bin – and then realize we really shouldn’t have done that.  What to do?  Well, to start with, immediately stop using your PC, do not copy or move any files, and most importantly don’t run a defrag or format the hard drive :)
